Biodiversity in production forests: Both costs and benefits shape the financial picture

Researchers from Wageningen University & Research and the University of Freiburg have published a comprehensive review in the journal *Current Forestry Reports* that compares forest management practices that include biodiversity conservation measures with standard businessโ€‘asโ€‘usual operations. The study synthesises data from projects across North America, Europe, Asia and Africa, covering a range of forest types and management objectives. The review was released this month, offering a global snapshot of how biodiversity initiatives influence the economics of timber production.

Forests are valued for more than just the wood they produce. They also provide clean air, water regulation, carbon storage, and habitat for countless species. In recent years, governments and international bodies have pushed for stronger conservation standards in commercial forests to meet climate targets and biodiversity commitments. This shift has raised a practical question for landowners: do the extra costs of protecting wildlife, soil, and water outweigh the benefits of a more sustainable operation, or do they create new revenue streams that can offset the investment?

The review finds a mixed financial picture. In some cases, adding biodiversity safeguardsโ€”such as retaining oldโ€‘growth patches, creating wildlife corridors, or reducing pesticide useโ€”led to higher shortโ€‘term costs and slightly lower timber yields. However, the same studies also reported longโ€‘term gains from ecosystem services: higher soil fertility, reduced erosion, and increased attraction for ecoโ€‘tourism. Several projects were able to tap into carbonโ€‘credit markets or secure subsidies for biodiversity stewardship, which helped balance the books. Industry representatives welcomed the evidence that, while there are upfront expenses, the longโ€‘term economic and environmental returns can be substantial.

The findings will inform policy makers and forest managers about the tradeโ€‘offs involved in integrating biodiversity into commercial forestry. The authors call for clearer guidelines that help owners quantify both the costs and the hidden benefits of conservation measures. As more countries adopt legally binding sustainability standards, the review provides a valuable evidence base for designing incentives that make biodiversityโ€‘friendly forestry profitable, rather than a costโ€‘driven obligation.
