Coinbase announced on Tuesday that it will relaunch its former retail platform, Coinbaseโ€ฏPro, by the end of 2024 and has completed the integration of cryptoโ€‘options and futures venue Deribit, creating a unified โ€œCoinbase Global Exchange.โ€ The move brings together spot, derivatives and institutional services under one brand for the first time.

The decision follows a year of turbulence for Coinbaseโ€™s retail offering. In June 2023 the company shut down Coinbaseโ€ฏPro, citing low usage and the need to focus on its flagship app. Users were forced to migrate to a lessโ€‘featureโ€‘rich interface, prompting criticism from active traders who missed advanced charting and lowerโ€‘fee structures. Meanwhile, competitors such as Kraken and Binance have expanded their own derivatives suites, attracting liquidity away from the U.S. market. By acquiring Deribitโ€™s technology and marketโ€‘making capabilities, Coinbase hopes to fill the gap in U.S. crypto derivatives and retain highโ€‘frequency traders who have been drifting to offshore platforms.

The integrated exchange will support spot trading, options, futures and leveraged tokens on a single account, with fee tiers that mirror those of the former Pro platform. Coinbase said the new system will roll out to existing users in phases, starting with a beta for highโ€‘volume traders in October and a full public launch before yearโ€‘end. The company expects the combined offering to boost daily trading volume by at least 20โ€ฏpercent, potentially adding $5โ€ฏbillion in new assets under management. Regulators are watching closely, as the expanded product suite will require additional compliance filings with the SEC and CFTC. If the rollout proceeds smoothly, Coinbase could solidify its position as the dominant U.S. crypto exchange and set a new standard for integrated trading services.
